Aristotle
Aristotle is often viewed as a philosopher and scientist. However, he was also interested in ethics and politics. His writings covered a wide range of subjects including metaphysics, physics, astronomy, and literature.
Aristotle’s philosophy has played a vital role in understanding nature. For instance, he explains the process of genesis, which unifies the noetic and nutritive soul. He differentiates between accidents and formal causation, which is the reason for the growth of an organism. In addition, he discusses the syllogism forms and Prior Analytics.
Aristotle believed in spontaneous generation. He also believed that organisms can be produced by heat and moisture. He was able to distinguish between the four basic causes, material, formal, final, and efficient. He also developed the theory of causation. In fact, his work was the precursor to modern logic.
The main reason why Aristotle’s reputation declined was because of his reliance on experimental technology. He and his students gathered as much data as possible, given the available technologies. However, they did not have the modern scientific method. Hence, their conclusions were based on a poor foundation.
Aristotle’s treatises were not published in chronological order. They were rewritten and edited periodically. His surviving works account for about one fifth of his total output. He left his library to his successor as head of the Lyceum. His writings were then taken to Rome.
During the Middle Ages, each category was named by an abstract noun. For example, physis is “nature,” techne is “art,” and aitia is “cause.” Heidegger, in the early twentieth century, taught Aristotle’s philosophy to students. In his lectures, Heidegger did not explain the essence of technology, but instead interpreted the Greek understanding of being on the model of techne.
Aristotle’s treatises are full of energy. He explains many things, and his prose is not always lucid. But his logic is sound. And his works are still used in contemporary philosophy.
In the early 2000s, Aristotle’s reputation started to recover. He was also taken seriously as a social scientist. Aristotle urged moderation in extreme regimes. The common good is the purpose of political action, and authority should be apportioned according to the contribution it makes to this good.
Plato
The name Plato may sound like a name on a lottery ticket, but he was actually one of the best philosophers of his era. This Greek virtuoso authored an enlightening work on technology and cosmology.
The most obvious point is that the ancient Greeks had a more thoughtful view of technology than we do. They had a keen understanding of the complexities of human action and how it was facilitated by technology. They were more cognizant of the fact that there was a maker of all things, including the universe and the planets. Moreover, they had a sense of humour and a distinctly modern attitude towards things that did not belong.
For example, they believed there was a divine Demiurge, whose role in the creation of the universe was the most important. The best part is that the aforementioned Demiurge gave form to formless matter in accordance with eternal ideas. This explains the art of the possible, the fabled universe, and the concept of a Maker’s Garden.
Another interesting tidbit is that the most successful technology companies in the world were founded in Silicon Valley. The epicenter of Silicon Valley is home to the Silicon Valley Start-Ups, which include a variety of high-tech startups. A few of them are venture capital funded, and include Plato Design Systems, Synopsys, Acorn Angels, and InTime Software Inc.
